Sibling DNA Testing

A Sibling DNA test is performed when an alleged father is deceased or unavailable for paternity testing and alleged siblings want to know if they have one or both parents in common.

A sibling DNA test is conducted when an alleged father is deceased or unavailable for paternity testing, and alleged siblings want to know if they have one or both parents in common. A sibling DNA test can be done for both a legal purpose and personal knowledge. If you want to results for your peace-of-mind, you can collect the DNA sample(s) in the privacy of your own home with our home-testing DNA kits. But to use test results in legal matters, DNA sample collection must take place at an authorized location

Situations in which a siblingship DNA test proves beneficial:

  • To establish the truth about a biological relationship
  • To know medical history for the diagnosis of a specific health situation.
  • To obtain social security benefits.
  • To provide proof for inheritance claims
  • To establish the relationship in immigration cases
  • To present evidence for insurance claims.

Types of sibling DNA testing:

Full vs Half Sibling DNA Test:

A Full vs Half sibling DNA test is performed when two siblings share the same mother but would like to know if they share the same biological father. If they share a father they would be full siblings. A Full vs Half siblings test can only be performed if two individuals (Sibling 1 and Sibling 2) are certain that they share the same mother, but want to know if they share the same father.

Half sibling vs. not related DNA test

A Half Sibling DNA test is performed when two alleged siblings do not have the same biological mother but want to know if they share the same biological father. For this test, samples are taken from both the mothers and the two potential siblings to identify the father’s genes correctly.

Testing Throughout the United States (U.S.): If one party is located in a different city or state, we can setup testing at a partner laboratory site throughout the U.S.

Understanding sibling DNA test results:

It is a little tricky to understand the DNA test results for siblings as there is no straight “yes” or “no” answer in such cases. All relationship testing such as a grandparent, aunt/uncle, or sibling involves statistical analyses, and the probability of the relationship is presented as a percentage in the test reports. We may obtain the following percentage of probability of relations in DNA analysis:

  1. 90% or higher: Generally, this indicates the relationship is definitive and supported by DNA testing.
  2. 9% to 89%: If we obtain this percentage range in our test results, generally, this means that results are inconclusive. In such cases, additional parties need to be tested.
  3. Less than 9%: Generally, this indicates that the relationship is not supported by DNA testing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes, the Sibling DNA test can determine the likelihood of two or more individuals being full siblings, half-siblings, or not sharing any biological relationship. Full siblings have both parents in common, i.e., mother and father, while half-siblings have only one parent in common, i.e., either father or mother. However, it is impossible to conclude which parent they share without further DNA analysis.

Full siblings share around 50% of their DNA, while half-siblings share about 25% of DNA.

We take DNA samples from the alleged siblings by rubbing the inside of the cheek with a swab to collect cheek cells. In our labs, we extract the DNA from these cells. We then perform statistical analysis to estimate the amount of DNA shared between the tested individuals. Full siblings share more DNA than half-siblings while half-siblings share more DNA than any two unrelated individuals.
